We are planning a trip in early June which would encompass Mt Bromo and then onto Yogyakarta to see Borobudur and Prambanan as well as a few other sights around Yogyakarta. My questions are
1. Would we be better to fly into Malang or Surabaya to then travel to Mt Bromo? (leaning towards Malang as it sounds like a great spot)
2. What is the best way to then travel on to Yogyakarta (we are a group of four adults); private car with driver or trains?
3. How long do you think we will need? I am thinking arrive early in the day in Malang, go to Bromo early the next day then off to Yogyakarta later that day. Then two days in Yogyakarta. Let me know if you think this too rushed (we can take no more than 5 days).
Thanks Robyn
From Mt Bromo to Borobodur
Hi Robyn,
The best way to see Gunung Bromo/Semeru is early morning (before sunrise)( you can walk or get a jeep up to very close and then walk a little way to the viewing platform and then once the sun is up getting the jeep across to the base of Gunung Bromo and climb up the stairs to look down into the crater. One can also walk around the edge of the crater if you are that way inclined- I certainly wasn%26#39;t.
This means you need to stay the night at Cemoro Lawang and book the morning jeep at the warung next to Cafe Lava Hostel.
Be aware it is very cold up there so bring a warm jacket with you and warm socks.
When I went to Cemoro Lawang, I based myself in Surabaya and caught the train to Probolinggo at 9am and then once in Probolinggo got the local bus to the bus terminal and then waited for the bus to Cemoro Lawang to fill- took abiout 1.5 hrs.
Then the bus trip up to Cemoro Lawang was about 1 hr.
Once I had seen Gunung Bromo and Semeru in the distance I caught a bus down to Probolinggo bus terminal and then a bus to Malang- bus trip took about 5 hrs.
Malang is lovely, cleaner, much quieter and peaceful and cooler than Surabaya.
And a lot closer to Yogakarta than Surabaya.
If there are 4 adults in your group I would be hiring a driver/car- so much more comfortable and organised if you only have a short time to see a lot.
Borobudur and Prambanan can been seen in a morning or afternoon trip- certainly does not take a whole day.
Hope this helps.

In addition, you can also hire a private car from Malang to Bromo (the cost is about Rp. 700.000,- for return trip). You need to depart from Malang at around midnight if you want to see the sunrise in Bromo.
From Malang to Yogtakarta, train (Gajayana) departs in the afternoon and arrives at Yogyakarta in the late midnight. Alternatively, travel (a minibus 9 seater) is also convenience, which pick up you at your hotel in Malang and bring you to your address in Yogyakarta (every 2 or 3 hours). Private car with driver from Malang to Yogyakarta is quite expensive.
Enjoy...
