Planning a Wedding in Bali

Hi there;

My sister is planning her wedding in Bali in july 2010 and is in much need of any advice that anyone has. She wants to have a legally binding ceremony.

Also does anyone know if its necessary that she and her fiancee are baptised. My sister is baptised catholic but her partner is not baptised anything. They would like a catholic ceremony.

Cheers

Karen

There are a few complications if only 1 is baptised catholic.

Planning a Wedding in Bali

i have written a lot of replies about getting married in bali which you can read if you like. i was married there in 2007 and it is a truly wonderful experience. it does not matter that one person is baptised catholic or not baptised at all. what matters is that both parties MUST be of the same religion ie both christians, baptism is not an essential thing and you do not show any baptism certificates. the most important thing is that the wedding is legally recognised . to do this you MUST have two ceremonies (one straight after the other) first the legal ceremony by bali officials then the religious ceremony. it takes approx 30 minutes in total.

to get started it is a good idea to set a budget and choose a organiser / venue. i used Desi from Bali Wedding Butler. we had a small ceremony. once that is decided the organiser will request different paperwork such as birth certificates, (divorce certificates if applicable). once the necessary paperwork is e mailed or faxed the organiser will organise the legalities and the christian priest. all other things such as decorations, cake, etc are organised. once you arrive in bali the organiser will meet with you go through all the details and take you to the australian consulate in denpasar where you get a certificate of no impediment. you also get some photos taken which will be part of the wedding certificates.

most weddings are held late afternoon due to the heat. it is worth while sending a number of e mails to get quotes. be aware some hotels charge to have a ceremony in their grounds others the cost is free. budgets vary from very cheap to very very expensive so take your time to get what you want.

once you return to australia you DO NOT register the marriage at births deaths and marriages as the marriage is registered in bali (and can legally only be registered once). the marriage is legally recognised world wide. what you do is use the wedding certificates to legally change surnames with births deaths and marriage and at banks etc.

happy to help you further. it can be a bit daunting trying to organise a wedding long distance but it is truly worth it.
