things to buy.

hi, what is it like for shopping in bali?

is it like thailand with all the fake watches and fake designer clothes etc or is it just mainly surf wear?

cheers

things to buy.

I don%26#39;t think there is a place in the world you can go to anymore and not be stopped to buy watches. Did not see much fake designed clothes. Lots of shops that make there own clothes. Sanur has some good dress shop - my wife loved it there. Ubud is overrun with shops - great jewlery and clothes. Not sure I even saw surf wear - maybe that was in Kuta, and didn%26#39;t spend much time there. Also some great restaurants.

things to buy.

if you go to the market type areas yes a bit the same not so rushed I just shop in the department stores so cheap and real

Surf wear - mainly in Kuta and some parts of Legian...

Clothing (not surf wear)/(some)household - Legian and Seminyak

Handmade Ceremics - Jenggala

Crafts/Art work - Ubud and surroundings

Fake watches and Designer goods - I think it%26#39;s mainly Kuta area - not sure, don%26#39;t go for that stuff. ;-P

You can find loads of stuff in Kuta - not just surf wear.. :-)

Favorite things I bought:

textiles especially sarongs (mostly in Lombok but also in Bali)

carved wooden holders to display fabric

wooden bracelets, belts, and necklaces

art from the Seniswati Gallery of art by women in Ubud; modest prices

print purse

dried jackfruit

sea salt, in baskets with tiny coconut spoons

salad tongs from coconut

embroidered skirts

silk scarves

vanilla beans

wooden musical instruments including cool rattles

You can definitely pick up deals in the markets if you know what things should cost and are prepared to bargain hard. It is easier to go to stores with labels. In the south, Hardy%26#39;s in Sanur has a second level filled with crafts of individual merchants.
