Gili trawangan

Hello outthere :-)

Are planning to go to Trawangan, but have just read in my Bali travelbook, that there is a lot of drinking going on, should be drugs as well, and women should not walk alone at night :-(

Anybody know if this is true? We are a family with 2 children, and are now a little affraid of going there..eventhough the place seems to be a really nice place. Please help us, tell us this is not the truth....

When I last went over to Gili T last year it was full of tourists, restaurants doing a good trade, a few propping up the bars late at night and some signs about magic mushrooms. The supposed happening place is in the south east of the island and some people complain they can hear music to all hours if they stay in that area, I never heard much. Plenty of people take their kids. I am sure the book referred to women walking at night up laneways to places with little lighting, this would apply to anywhere in the world.

Gili T is a great place for families so go and enjoy.

Thank you very much!!! Just what I needed to hear :-) We are going to up in the north western part, and the place(hotel) is told to be very quiet and calm, away from the ';city';. we continue to plan our trip, just needed to hear from someone who have been there. Thanks :-)

Gili Trawangan, is a great place for family and kids.

It is very popular with tourists, there are bars on the island,however there is no worries. FYI... i reccomend eating at The Beachhouse they have a great seafood display/BBQ at night and a nice lunch time menu all by the sea!!

i travel with wife and two kids and been to gili t twice and have had and seen no problems. drinking is in a few bars at night. we are going again in may09. i like it. nothing there to be afraid of, definitely.

By the way, we have booked at Alam gili, north western part of the island, do anyone know if there are good snorkeling opportunities in that part? we are ';fairly new in this snoklingworld';, is it possible to hire a snorkle guide up there?? yes there is good snorkelling. in the shallows close to shore all around the island there is good snorkelling. most snorkelling there is %26#39;drift%26#39;. that is, you go in the water swim out a bit and the current takes you along over the coral, then you aim for shore at 45 degree angle and walk back to the start. so the idea is to know where you want to start and finish. the surrents are strong so don%26#39;t swim against them, you%26#39;ll only waste energy.

there are snorkelling tours about 60 000 to 80 000 rups pp that take you to snorkelling spots on all three gilis. this is a good start as you are being watched by the people in the boat.

you can also hire a boat and snorkel more privately.

when at the gilis you will find that the water is shallow and a little further out the reef drops off dramatically to deep water. the fish and coral life at the drop offs is very good.

we take our own snorkelling gear (i prefer to know it%26#39;s my mouth only that has been on the snorkel) though there is plenty to hire for adults it may be a problem for your kids.

whereever you snorkel ask the locals about conditions before you go in.

you are most welcome. good idea to do the organised snorkel trip first.

tip: sometimes there is jellyfish that sting in the water off gili the gilis. rinse with cold water when you get out of the water. an antihistamine is good if stung badly to ease the itch which comes later. dont scratch them if red bumps come up - use calamine lotion or ask locals for treatment advice.
